Winter break is a unique season for college parents. Our kids are home but not quite the same way they used to be. They’re more independent, more tired, and often already thinking about what’s next.
If you’re wondering how to use this time in a way that’s genuinely helpful (and not overbearing), here are a few ideas.
Create space for rest
Fall semester can be exhausting. Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply letting them decompress and reset.
Expect schedules to look different
Winter break often includes a mix of family time, catching up on sleep, work shifts, gym routines, and reconnecting with old friends (including significant others) they haven’t seen in months. You may not see them as much as you expected, and that’s normal.
Be intentional about family time...and flexible about how it happens
Rather than expecting everyone to be available all the time, it can help to plan a few intentional moments. One-on-one time, a shared meal, or a weekly family day can go a long way - even if plans don’t always work out perfectly.
Old traditions may change, but connection still matters. Meeting your kids where they are - while still making family time a priority - helps set a healthy tone for this season.
Encourage small resets
Simple things like cleaning out backpacks, updating calendars, or refilling prescriptions can help set them up for a smoother spring.
Let go of expectations
Winter break may look different every year and that’s okay. Progress doesn’t always look productive.
Support during college often happens quietly. Showing up, listening, and creating space for connection matters more than doing everything “right.”
