When to Send a College Care Package

Birthdays and finals week are two of the most popular times to send a college care package.

They are not the only times a student may appreciate a little encouragement from home.

Over the years, CarePaks 101 customers have sent packages for all kinds of reasons. Some marked a special occasion. Others arrived during a difficult week, a long stretch away from home, or an ordinary moment when a student simply needed a reminder that someone was thinking about them.

A Few Weeks After Move-In

Move-in day is busy, emotional, and filled with new experiences. The first few weeks can feel exciting too.

Once classes begin and the activity slows down, students may start to feel the adjustment more deeply. By then, they also know where packages are delivered and have a better idea of what they need.

That can be a meaningful time for the first care package of the year.

Before Midterms or Finals

Midterms and finals can bring several exams, projects, and deadlines in a short period.

A care package sent before the busiest days begin gives your student time to enjoy the snacks and read your message while studying.

Campus mailrooms can become crowded during finals, so earlier is usually better than trying to time delivery for the final day or two.

For a Birthday Away From Home

A college birthday can feel different, especially during the first year.

Even students celebrating with friends may miss family traditions and the familiar parts of a birthday at home. A birthday care package gives you a way to make the day feel noticed and personal from a distance.

Order early enough to allow for carrier delays and campus mailroom processing.

After a Difficult Week

Sometimes there is no official occasion.

Your student may have received a disappointing grade, had a disagreement with a roommate, experienced a breakup, or simply had a week when everything felt harder than usual.

A care package does not need to fix the problem. It lets your student know you are thinking about them and cheering them on.

At the Start of a New Semester

The beginning of fall semester receives most of the attention, but returning in January can be an adjustment too.

Students come back to new classes, colder weather, and a long stretch before spring break. A care package can help mark the fresh start and bring a little encouragement to campus.

During a Long Stretch Between Visits

Some semesters include long gaps when students cannot come home.

This is especially common for students attending college far away or remaining on campus during shorter breaks. A care package can break up the calendar and give them something unexpected to look forward to.

A long month away from home can be reason enough.

After a Milestone or Accomplishment

College students reach plenty of milestones that do not come with a formal celebration.

They may:

  • Finish a difficult project

  • Land an internship

  • Earn a leadership position

  • Complete an important presentation

  • Make a team or organization

  • Get through a particularly challenging class

A care package and handwritten message can let them know you noticed.

Before an Important Event

Students sometimes mention important dates casually.

A job interview, presentation, performance, audition, competition, or other big event may be coming up. Sending something beforehand is a simple way to say, “We know this matters, and we are cheering you on.”

This works best when you know the date early enough to allow for delivery.

During the Slower Parts of the Semester

Some parts of the college year feel longer than others.

The excitement of move-in has passed. The weather may be cold and dreary. Spring break still feels far away. Classes and routines have settled into the everyday.

A care package during one of these stretches does not need to be connected to a holiday. Sometimes the timing is what makes it special.

Just Because

Some of the most appreciated care packages arrive during an ordinary week.

No birthday. No exam. No major event.

A parent simply decided it was a good time to send a little encouragement.

CarePaks 101 has always been built around helping parents celebrate, encourage, and stay connected with their college students. Sometimes the right time to send a care package is simply when you think your student would enjoy a reminder that home is cheering them on.
